18-19 HCPs balanced hand.

No 5 card suits or singletons. 4333 or 4432 distributions only. Bid replaces opening a hand too strong for 1NT in a short minor suit. With a 5 card suit open 1 of the suit and rebid 2NT / 3NT to show strength. This way you will be playing a 1 level contract in your 5 card suit when partner has a bust. After a minor suit opening and any suit response at the 1 level from partner, a 2NT rebid would indicate that the minor suit was 5 cards in length.

Responses are designed to have the strong hand play in most situations:

PASS weak hand with diamond length

2 weak hand. Transfer to spades or indirect transfer to clubs.

2♠ automatic

PASS spade length

2NT transfer to clubs

2 relay to 2NT or weak hand - indirect transfer to hearts

2NT automatic

PASS to play

3 transfer to hearts

3NT to play

4♣ Gerber

2NT major suits. Minimum distribution 4/5.

3/ 4 card suit

3♣ no 4 card major. Responder bids using puppet responses:

3 5-5 in majors

3 5 spades

3 5 hearts

Opener bids the appropriate major if a 5/3 fit is available or 3NT otherwise.

Responder will play the hand only when opener's distribution is 3-2 in the majors and no 8 card fit has been found.

3♣ Stayman. Opener rebids using puppet responses:

3NT no 4 card major

3 4 card major. Responder rebids:

3 4 spades

3 4 hearts

4 4-4 in majors

3 strong hands with 5 hearts - transfer to hearts

3 3 hearts

4 4 hearts

3NT 2 hearts

3 strong hand with 5 spades - transfer to spades
