On the Other Hand: Bridge cardplay explained
by David Bird and Larry Cohen

In this unusual book, David Bird and Larry Cohen combine to present cardplay instruction in a new way. 100 pairs of deals are shown - one described by David and the other by Larry. The deals look similar (in some cases very similar) but an entirely different line of play is necessary to make each of the contracts. Only by clearly understanding the techniques involved will you be able to tackle such deals when you encounter them at the table.

The latest installment of the Insights on Bridge series contains hundreds more carefully crafted mini-lessons designed to turn aspiring players into good players. The material in this book is devoted to situations and problems you will see at the table but are hard to find in books.

Note From Mike Lawrence:

AFTER WRITING OVER 25 books on bridge that discuss certain aspects of play, defense, system, or general bidding, I've begun a series of books aimed at turning aspiring players into good players. Note I don't say expert players. That will be the next step. Bridge isn't a game where you can immerse yourself for six months and become a good player. There's just too much to learn. You have to start somewhere and then move in the right direction. Typically, when you start playing in a club, you feel lost. After you get your feet on the ground, you still recognize that you aren't moving very fast. Going forward requires that you get good guidance. Many players at your club will offer advice. Much of that advice, unfortunately, isn't very good. This series of books includes hundreds of mini-lessons, complete with insights and advice you can count on. The material is devoted to situations and problems you will see at the table but not in other books. This book (#2 in a series) won't make you an expert. But these books will start you on the path to being a good player and a good partner. Enjoy the trip.

The Magic of Defense

THIS EASY GUIDE to defense, both fun and memorable, will take a newer player quickly up to an intermediate skill level, if not beyond, with all of the tools needed to progress even further. DEFENSE IS THE MOST EXCITING part of the game, without a doubt. There is nothing better than when you and partner are communicating effectively on the defense of a bridge hand. This book is aimed at both teaching you how to do that and instilling in you and your partner that same sense of enjoyment from defending accurately.

Bridge Squeezes for Everyone: Yes, Even You!
by David Bird

Did you always think squeezes were too difficult? Or perhaps you know the basics but now you want to learn about more complex and advanced squeeze positions? If you fit either of these categories, or even if you just want to improve your understanding of an important aspect of declarer play, this book is for you. David Bird, who lives near Southampton, England, has written more than 100 books on the game. Despite spending much of the year travelling, he still finds time to write new stories every month for a host of magazines around the world, usually featuring his best-known characters, the monks of St. Titus Abbey. He is also a regular commentator on BBO broadcasts of top-level competitions.

Defensive Signaling at Bridge
by David Bird

The author begins this thorough discussion of a neglected but vital topic by examining the real purpose of defensive signalling, and the basic kinds of signals that are available. He goes on to recommend a comprehensive set of signalling agreements, and analyzes more complex situations in the light of these agreements. Most of the chapters are followed by a quiz, and the answer to each signalling problem includes a full 52-card diagram to demonstrate the effectiveness of the recommended signal. The book finishes with a chapter that looks at the signalling methods of eight world-class pairs, with examples of their methods in action. A book any player who is looking to improve will want to read.

Bridge Endplays for Everyone: Yes, Even You!
by David Bird

Endplays are an aspect of bridge declarer play that many intermediate players think are beyond them. Yet while they can be extremely complex, the basic principles are not. Several years ago, David Bird wrote Bridge Squeezes for Everyone, a book about an even more complex topic that has become a modern classic. Using the same straightforward, conversational style with recaps and quizzes that characterized the earlier book, this new title will make endplays understandable to many readers who have been afraid to attempt to learn them.
